Michael's first chance of the big time was immediately scotched by his mum..who refused to let him join Robert Palmer's original band in Scarborough so he could concentrate on his 'O' levels instead. But he did manage a couple of guest appearances with seminal Scarborough combo The Urge as a backing group to Geno Washington and the Ram Jam Band.

In the intervening years the urge died away - as often happens - until his long lost brother Christopher invited him to join Prick Up Your Ears in 1996. Michael now lives in hope that this could be the big one.

In the few moments he spends away from his keyboards, Michael pays the bills by anchoring Sky News' business programmes and playing a little bit of what you fancy on Jazz Fm.
